One month later, Grace, Kimaya, and Vidya were getting fitted for their dresses for the wedding, which would be held on October 7th before Grandfather’s Birthday Celebration ball. Veronica and Teresita took measurements, pinned and unpinned and repinned various features of their dresses, and finally had the ladies undress to have the wedding garb sent to Sentinel Command.

Kimaya finished chattering about the preparations Duke Ruya had been making at the Samhadi Retreat, guaranteeing there would be no one at the resort but workers for their two-week honeymoon. “Should I inform Duke Jayani of any particular requirements you have?”

“I don’t know if there are any masseuses there, and otherwise I hope the guest houses have decent beds.” Vidya grinned at the giggling ladies, eyes merry behind her final light shade of goggles.

“Masseuses? Isn’t Grace going as your lady-in-waiting?” Kimaya glanced between them.

“Yes, but she desperately needs a vacation, so I don’t plan to ask her to do a single thing for me. Although she went to the Retreat for dinner once with Sunay, we plan to ignore each other’s existence the entire time. She has always wanted to return, so this is her chance.”

“Yes, it was glorious.” Grace raved about the gorgeous landscaping, the statues hidden in secret corners, and even the short, philosophical statements carved in stone or built into the landscape in some way. “There was one field of tiny red and white flowers where the red ones spelled out the word, ‘Thrive’. It was phenomenal. I hope they’re still alive when we get there.”

“Oh, I’m certain they will be; plants don’t die off for winter in Ruya Duchy until mid-November, since we’re so close to the equator. I had only seen snow once in my life before I came to the Urban District.” Kimaya described a snow-sculpture contest her University science friends had held last year in the field across from the Brighton Sorority House. “My classmates asked me to ask the ladies there to judge them as a contest. It was great publicity, and we even lit them up with colored spotlights that weekend so Urbanites could drive by and see them before they melted.”

Grace noticed the time. “We need to start getting you ready for dinner.” She sighed.

“What’s wrong, Grace?” Kimaya had always been grateful for her assistance with Vidya, so she had always been attentive to Grace’s moods and needs.

“Nothing, really. I was simply looking at the master schedule earlier, and with the final Ducal Assembly sessions before Fall Break as well as galactic guests invited to the wedding, we don’t have a single day off until the bachelorette party on the 6th. Not even Sundays; Grandmother has a number of private dinners scheduled with important guests.”

Vidya giggled. “You mean, I don’t. You can certainly take some time for yourself the next two weekends, though. Consider it a birthday gift, since your birthday is next Wednesday. I have several other people I can depend on now, thanks to all your training.”

“Both weekends off? I thank you, but now I wonder what I’ll do to stave off boredom.
